Retaining-Wall Bases
Water that drains instead of pushing on the wall
Based on your answers, here's what we'd use

Washed Drain Rock - 3/4"
Rounded washed stone that drains freely and doesn't hold moisture against the wall.
We recommend about 12″ deep — the usual width of drainage rock behind a wall
Soil packed straight against the back of a wall holds water, and that water is weight the wall has to carry.
Why this material
- Water moves through the gaps
- Does not hold moisture against the wall
- Takes the water weight off the wall
- Rounded, washed stone with no fines in it
A column of washed rock behind the wall gives water somewhere to go, so it drains away rather than building up behind the stone.
